The three decade long civil war created more than one generation of widows and women-headed-households in Sri Lanka. In such a situation, it is of grave importance that these war-affected women are given the right assistance to rejoin society and provide for their families, who now solely depend on them for survival. “Engalal Mudiyathathu Ethuvumillai” (Widows of the North) is a film which traces the experiences of such women, who have been affected directly and indirectly by the war. These women have not only managed to survive, but have risen to achieve great feats as both single mothers and members of their society. We hope this documentary film will be a source of inspiration for women with similar experiences, who have lost loved ones and experienced physical and mental trauma, as a result of many years of violence, displacement and conflict.
